LYNCHBURG — Maggie Thompson jumped her way to the state meet.
Cedric Drennen got it done with his distance running.
Both Alleghany standouts had big performances Thursday at the Class 3, Region D indoor track championships at Liberty University.
Thompson, a junior, finished second in the triple jump (32-7) and third in the long jump (14-10), while Drennen, a senior, placed second in both the 1,600 meters (4:34.22) and 3,200 meters (10:02.87).
All four state qualifying efforts were personal bests for the twosome.
“Cedric is another in the long line of distance runners that have had a lot of success at Alleghany,” said AHS coach Bob Umstead. “He is a very hard worker. Maggie, I really believe her future is very, very bright.”
Drennen scored 16 of the Mountaineers’ 18 team points in boys competition, good for seventh in the 10-team field.
Erik Honaker, Andrew Peck, Mason Honaker and Jeffrey Harris — all freshmen — combined for the other two points with a fifth place finish in the 4 x 800 meter relay.
Thompson scored all 14 of Alleghany’s girls points, placing them ninth.
Christiansburg ran away with the girls team title and nipped Cave Spring, 115-111, for the boys championship.
The Class 3 state championship meet will be held February 23-24 at Roanoke College.
