Cougar Boys, PM Girls Lead Pioneer Pack

Sports Editor
With four make-up games on the docket for today, the Pioneer District tournament brackets are a work in progress.

But one thing is for sure, the top seeds and tournament favorites are clear.

Covington’s boys and Parry McCluer’s girls both completed unbeaten runs through the district regular seasons.

The Cougar boys were 10-0 with a pair of single digit wins over No. 2 seed Parry McCluer.

On the girls side, things weren’t nearly as close.

The Fighting Blues, the defending Class 1 state champions and favorites to win it all again, cruised through the league with an 11-0 record and a 66-point average margin of victory.

Covington’s girls will be either the No. 2 or No. 3 seed in the tournament and will host either Bath County or Highland County at 6 p.m. on Monday. The Chargers will be the No. 6 seed, going to either Covington or Narrows. The girls semifinals are Wednesday at Bath County.

The Cougar boys have a bye to the district semifinals on Thursday evening in Hot Springs, while the Chargers will face Craig County on Monday in the 4-5 game, with the site to be determined by today’s results.

Saturday’s six-game card at BCHS includes junior varsity championship games, consolation contests and championship games in both boys and girls.

Covington will face off with Narrows in the boys junior varsity title game with Parry McCluer and the Green Wave hooking up for the girls JV championship.

All four varsity teams advancing to the semifinals will receive berths in the Class 1, Region C tournament, beginning on Monday, February 19.
