The sixth annual Cork & Pork Festival in downtown Covington June 23-24 will include a first this year — the Backyard BBQ Bash.
The event will be held on the Mid City Mall parking lot.
“We are very excited to offer this type of event to our local, backyard grillmasters,” said David (B.B.) Bryant, an organizer of Cork & Pork. “You can use any backyard cooker as long as it is not over $1,000 in retail value.”
Guidelines for the Backyard BBQ Bash are as follows:
•First 10 teams of three members are guaranteed entry. A maximum 15-team limit will be based on available space after 10 teams. You will need a team name as well.
•Entry priority is based on coming to Covington City Hall and filling out the team log.
•Teams will be accepted from Alleghany, Bath and Greenbrier counties.
•The entry fee is $20 per team. The entry deadline is June 16.
•Each team will compete in a judged completion and people’s choice.
•Backyard cooking devices can be used. A maximum retail value of $1,000 including gas grills, plain charcoal/wood grills, eggs up to large size, retail grill/smoker combos just not over $1,000 in retail value. Up to three cook devices allowed.
•A 15 x 15 cooking space (tent allowed).
•Each team is required to have a cooler with ice for food storage.
•Each team is required to meet health and safety regulations.

As always, the Covington Cork & Pork Festival is a Kansas City Barbecue Society-sanctioned event. It will include food, music, dancing and children’s entertainment.
