Mountaineers Pick Up Pair Of Big Blue Ridge District Wins

VINTON — Veteran Alleghany baseball coach Gary Rice has relied heavily on the right arms of Kent Rooklin and Tucker Keener this spring.

They continue to be solid.

On back-to-back nights Tuesday and Wednesday, both picked up complete-game Blue Ridge District wins as the Mountaineers topped Staunton River and William Byrd.

Tuesday, Rooklin (3-2) allowed just three hits and a single earned run in a 4-2 home win over the Golden Eagles, and Wednesday, it was Keener (6-3) silencing the Terriers on just two hits in a 3-1 victory in Vinton.

“Two outstanding pitcher efforts,” said Rice following Wednesday night’s win. “Both Kent and Tucker were in command of the game. They had really good control of their pitches.”

Keener’s win over Byrd featured 16 assists from his infield.

“I don’t know if we’ve ever had 16 infield assists in a game before,” Rice said.

Seth Carter, Trey Honts, Rooklin, Keener, Colby Skidmore and Daryn Hilemon all had one hit for the Mountaineers.

Skidmore and Adam Vess drove in runs.

In Tuesday’s victory, Carter went 3-for-3 with two runs scored from the top of the Alleghany line-up.

Rooklin and Triston Hensley had the other Mountaineer knocks.

The Mountaineers set in fifth place, but just a game and a half out of first with one week left in the Blue Ridge District regular season.

Alleghany (6-5 BRD, 10-7 overall) hosts Franklin County on Monday and travel to William Fleming on Tuesday.
