HAWTHORNE, Calif. — Michael Douglas Swoope Sr., 79, of Hawthorne, Calif., passed away Feb. 9, 2018.
He was born in Botetourt County, the son of Mary Jane Swoope and Cromer James Swoope Sr.
He attended Eagle Rock High School.
He served four honorable years in the U.S. Navy during the Korean War and in the Navy Reserve.
He was predeceased by his parents; his wife, Abby; sone, Michael Douglas Swoope Jr.; brothers, Cromer James (Jimmy) Swoope, David Anthony (Tony) Swoope, Wayne Taurman Swoope and Kyle (Butch) Swoope; and sisters, Jean Ann Withers and Bonna Vaughan.
He is survived by brothers, Ronnie Swoope and Steve Swoope; daughter, Amy Swoope, son, John Swoope; sisters; Ramona Wood and Shirley Griffin; as well as many special nieces and nephews.
He also had a special aunt, Sarah “Blackie” Payne of Iron Gate; and long time special friends, Jerry Johnson, Chet Stephens, Don Lewis and Carmelita Redwood.
Mike was very active in the Holy Faith Episcopal Church, cooking and delivering meals to older members and those who were homebound.
He was well known as a classic car lover, particularly Corvettes and Thunderbirds.
He was well thought of by his family and friends and touched their lives in helpful ways.
According to his wishes his body was cremated.
In the memory of Michael Douglas Swoope, a memorial service will be conducted at Iron Gate Baptist Church at 2 p.m. Saturday, April 14.
