Martha Coleman Moore Beard, age 102, of 3317 Longdale Furnace Road, Clifton Forge, Virginia died Sunday, February 11, 2018 at her residence.
She was born May 6, 1915 in Rockbridge County to the late Grant Moore and Doris Smith Moore.
She was a graduate of Radford College and began her teaching career in Irish Creek and Natural Bridge Public Schools in Rockbridge County. She retired from the Clifton Forge Public School System. She was a member of the Central United Methodist Church for 66 years and enjoyed traveling, baking cakes, working crossword puzzles, bird watching, and spending time with family and friends.
In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband, Curtis McDowell Beard in 1971; three brothers; and four sisters.
She is survived by her two daughters, Kathryn Wood and husband Joe of Millboro, and Lisa Beard of Clifton Forge; a son, Mac Beard of Clifton Forge; one grandson, Jon Beard and fiancé Karen Coon of Salem, VA; three nieces, Linda Andrews of Moore, SC , Doris Pelter of Bunea Vista, and Betty Simms of Salisbury, MD; three nephews, James Donald and Hope Zollman, both of Glasgow, and Bruce Beard of Lexington; a number of great nieces and great nephews; and special caregivers, Diane Bowles, Mary Ann Carroll, Cindy Gier, and Pat Shifflett.
A funeral service will be held on Wednesday, February 14, 2018 at 2:00 PM in the chapel of Nicely Funeral Home, Clifton Forge with Reverend Edith Snedegar officiating.
Interment will follow in Collierstown Presbyterian Church Cemetery in Collierstown.
Pallbearers will be Jon Beard, Jim Duncan, Hope Zollman, Bruce Bazzrea, Tony Forbes, and Jim Donald.
The family will receive friends Tuesday evening from 6:00 PM until 8:00 PM at Nicely Funeral Home.
