Board Chair Dies At Age 80
HOT SPRINGS — A former Alleghany County Board of Supervisors chairman and Alleghany County School Board chair has died.
William Stephen “Bill” Hodges, 80, of 200 Wil-Dan Lane, Hot Springs, died Monday, Dec. 4, 2017, at his residence.
He was born Feb. 14, 1937, at Minden, W.Va., a son of the late Earl Stephen Hodges and Geneva Helm Hodges.
In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by a brother, Robert Milton Hodges
Mr. Hodges retired from the Alleghany School Systems as the director of instruction and personnel. He also served as a principal at Falling Spring Elementary School and Central Elementary School.
Mr. Hodges represented the Falling Spring District on the Alleghany County Board of Supervisors and served as a chairman of the board. He also served on the Alleghany County School Board. For a time, he served as chairman of that board.
Mr. Hodges was instrumental in establishing the Jackson River Scenic Trail.
He was also a board member of the Jackson River Preservation Association.
Mr. Hodges was a member of Emory United Methodist Church as well Covington Lodge No. 171, A.F. & A.M. and the Clifton Forge Shrine Club. He served as treasurer for the Covington Masonic Lodge.
He was a coin collector and loved farming, carpentry and building things.
He had a love for his family, especially his granddaughter, Ayn.
Surviving are his wife of 60 years, Dana Clark Hodges of Hot Springs; two sons, William Anderson Hodges and his wife Ping of Mechanicsville and Stephen Linn Hodges of Hot Springs; one granddaughter, Ayn Hodges of Mechanicsville; his brother, Joseph Earl Hodges, of Port Orange, Fla.; special friends, Ryland and Patty Burchette of Covington, Archie Verdiglione of Le Plata, Md., Jim Hess of South Carolina and Dr. Raymond Brown of Indiana; and two nieces and one nephew.
A funeral service will be held Saturday, Dec. 16, at 2 p.m. in the Arritt Funeral Home Chapel with the Rev. Jim Hess officiating.
The family will receive their friends Friday, Dec.15, from 4-6 p.m. at Arritt Funeral Home with Masonic Rites at 6 p.m.
